Three-Day Mourning Period Is Declared

The terror attacks cut off the Dominican Republic from 1 million of its countrymen in the New York area--one of the city’s largest ethnic groups. President Hipolito Mejia declared three days of official mourning.
Hundreds of thousands of Dominicans seeking news of relatives and friends in the U.S. paralyzed international phone lines, which were crippled when the U.S. switching system of the Dominican Republic’s main long-distance company went out Tuesday morning. The switching system was on the roof of one of the World Trade Center towers.
