JERICHO, N.Y. — Hubert Green made a 25-foot birdie putt on the seventh playoff hole Sunday to beat Hale Irwin and win the Long Island Classic.
Green and Irwin began the final round tied and each shot a 68 to finish with a 14-under 199 at the par-71 Meadow Brook Club
It was Green’s fourth victory as a senior and first since 2000. He earned $255,000 to lift his total for the year to $830,515, his second best total in seven years on the tour.
Green’s winning putt was a downhill one and it came on the fourth time the two played the par-three 18th hole Sunday. Each had parred the 167-yard hole the first three times, but Irwin’s chip from pin high went just by the hole.
They played a playoff rotation of Nos. 18, 12 and 13, the latter two par-fours, twice with all pars until the deciding hole.
It was the seventh playoff on the tour this year and third in as many weeks. Irwin lost to Bob Gilder on the first extra hole at the SBC Senior Open in Chicago last week.
