NAACP rescinds ‘Aida’ nominations
In “Aida,” the title character goes through several severe reversals of fortune. That pattern continued last week.
On Monday, the NAACP Beverly Hills/Hollywood branch announced that the touring musical had received 11 nominations for the group’s theater awards -- tying for second place in the list of shows with the most nominations.
On Wednesday, the “Aida” nominations were rescinded. It turns out that the run of “Aida” at the Ahmanson Theatre played only six performances in 2002, closing on Jan. 5. The rules of the Los Angeles-based NAACP competition require nominees to have at least eight performances during the period of eligibility, which began Jan. 1 and ended Aug. 31.
“Aida” producer and Disney Theatrical Productions President Thomas Schumacher said in a statement: “We are so honored to have been nominated. We’re sorry that because of the technicality, we’re no longer eligible. We celebrate all the nominees and winners.”
Of course Aida, the character, has seen darker days -- at one point in the musical, she and her lover are buried alive.
