Tie With Costa Rica Brings Out the Worst
Turks were upset Sunday because their team’s 1-1 tie against Costa Rica has endangered the soccer-crazy nation’s hope of advancing to the second round.
Small crowds that had gathered at main squares in Istanbul and Ankara were ready to party after Emre Belozoglu scored for Turkey in the 56th minute. The mood changed when Costa Rica evened the score in the 86th minute and fans watching the game on TV sets in shops left shocked and disappointed.
In Istanbul, 30-year-old Resit Karaboga, a driver, rose from his chair and kicked a wall at the sound of the final whistle.
“I am furious,” he said.
“I don’t care anymore,” said his friend Atilla Dogan, 27, as he left the shop.
