Loosening of Organic Standards ‘Outrageous’

“Bill May Loosen ‘Organic’ Standards” (Feb. 14) reported that Rep. Nathan Deal of Georgia inserted a last-minute provision in the 2003 federal spending bill to allow livestock producers to use nonorganic feed if organic feed was too expensive and still label their product “organic.”
I find this outrageous and unbelievable. I want to trust that when government standards tell me something is organic, it is.
I have written my political representatives urging them to get this cynical, hypocritical provision removed from federal law.
I also have decided that I will not eat anything that contains a poultry product from Georgia until this is done. I urge others to do the same.
