Political Talks Faltering, Opposition Leader Says

Opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi accused Myanmar’s ruling military junta of taking no serious steps to end the country’s political deadlock, in a sign that reconciliation talks are faltering.
“No political dialogue has begun since the confidence-building talks started” in 2000, she told a crowd at the headquarters of her National League for Democracy. “The longer the delay ... the more people will suffer.”
The junta came to power in 1988 after crushing a democracy movement. It called elections in 1990 but refused to give up power when the NLD won.
