Sightseek to Face Affluent

After the Sunshine Millions, Santa Anita will still have a Grade I today. Sightseek, who has never lost in four starts on dirt, faces six other fillies and mares in the $200,000 Santa Monica Handicap at seven furlongs.

Owned by Juddmonte Farms and trained by Bobby Frankel, the Distant View filly will be ridden by Jerry Bailey.

If Sightseek, who was second in her lone start on the turf last summer at Saratoga, is to win her first Grade I, she’ll have to beat Affluent. Owned and bred by Janis Whitham and trained by Ron McAnally, the 5-year-old Affirmed mare has won four times on the dirt and three times on the turf. Alex Solis will ride Affluent.

A win by any of the others -- Kitty On The Track, Reine Des Neiges, Secret Of Mecca, Live Free Or Die and Whoopddoo -- would be a surprise.

Race of the day: The first at Santa Anita is an interesting optional claimer at seven furlongs that brings together Sunset Place, who has won two in a row for McAnally; Smile N Wildcat, making his first start for owner David Lanzman and trainer Doug O’Neill after being purchased privately, and Malibu Stakes runner-up Total Limit.

Who’s hot: Isaias Enriquez. The jockey ended his drought by winning Thursday with 3-1 shot Shezsospiritual and 5-2 second choice Native Vitality.

Who’s not: Vines And Wines. The 6-year-old gelding, entered in today’s second at Golden Gate Fields, has lost 55 of 56 starts.
