Public Schools in a Fix
Re “Work Rules Bust Holes in School Budgets,” by Lydia Segal, Commentary, April 7: As someone who has worked in private and public schools, the difference is stark. Private schools get all the funding they need to pay teachers and employees higher salaries -- mainly because parents at many schools pay a $15,000-a-year tuition. Here in California our public schools spend no more than $6,000 to $7,000 per child. This governor and Legislature don’t have the will to fix what really ails schools: Proposition 13.
All Segal is suggesting is that we rearrange the deck chairs on the Titanic; we’ve been sinking for 25 years, and it’s not because of painting rules.
