Wie to Play Elite Women’s Event

Michelle Wie has accepted a sponsor’s invitation for the Samsung World Championship to be played Oct. 14-17 at Bighorn Golf Club in Palm Desert.

Wie, who will turn 15 on Oct. 11, will be the seventh amateur player in the tournament’s 23-year history. The limited-field event is reserved for 20 of the top female players in the world.

Winners of major championships, the major LPGA season awards and leading money winners from worldwide tours are invited. One sponsor’s exemption is given each year.

Wie finished fourth at the Kraft Nabisco Championship, the first major of the season, which ended March 28. She also tied for 19th in the Safeway International on March 21. In January, she missed the cut by one shot in the PGA Tour’s Sony Open.
