NETRAKONA, Bangladesh — Tornadoes tore through northern Bangladesh, killing at least 38 people, injuring hundreds and blowing away thousands of flimsy huts, officials said today.
The twisters swept through nearly two dozen farming villages in Netrakona and neighboring Mymensingh districts Wednesday night.
At least 26 people, including children, were killed in Netrakona, 80 miles north of the capital, Dhaka, according to the local civil surgeon’s office. Nearly 700 people were injured there, some of them seriously, rescue workers said.
Another tornado struck neighboring Mymensingh, where rescuers found eight bodies in the rubble of twisted tin roofs and trees and four others died in a hospital, said Delwar Hossain, a rural council member.
