Irrigation District Buys Farmland to Save Water

The Imperial Irrigation District governing board has voted to spend $77.3 million to buy 42,000 acres of farmland in the Imperial Valley to help save enough water to fulfill a historic water contract with San Diego.
Buying the land from Palm Desert-based U.S. Filter gives the governing board the option of letting it lie fallow so that water can be sold to the San Diego County Water Authority under a 75-year agreement.
