FISH REPORT

Freshwater

Trout: Corona Lake and Santa Ana River Lakes, as usual, produced the largest fish, both yielding 20-pounders. Fly-fishermen are catching and releasing up to 30 fish daily at Laguna Niguel Park Lake using zebra midges. In Bishop, the Owens River and Pleasant Valley Reservoir are fair to good after plants of trout from 3 to 10 pounds. Notable catches at some less popular waters: a 5-7 rainbow at Jess Ranch Lakes for Peter Maclean, Twentynine Palms; a 9-8 rainbow at San Diego’s Poway Lake for Gary Grantham, Scripps Ranch; and a 13-8 rainbow at Bakersfield’s Buena Vista Lakes by Nick Baraza, Bakersfield.

Largemouth bass: Castaic Lake remains the most productive spot, with fish biting at about 30 feet on pig-and-jigs, split-shot and drop-shot plastic worms. Lee Kakuk, Chino, caught an 11-pound bass. Diamond Valley Lake is fair for those using Carolina-rigged plastic lizards or swimbaits at about 30 feet.

Striped bass: Striper action isn’t very good anywhere, but things have improved somewhat at Castaic, where mostly smaller fish are biting at about 50 feet on anchovies.

Panfish: The Lake Isabella crappie bite is the best thing going, with fish biting on live minnows in the tree areas. Nearby Lake Wollomes also has a fair crappie run, but for tiny fish. Lake Cachuma has the best local bite, as red-ear perch are nibbling on night crawlers in the Jack Rabbit Flats area.

Catfish: Lake Isabella is producing the most catches, but it’s slow most everywhere. Joe Salas of Oceanside caught a 58-pound blue and Cody Newton of Santee landed a 45-pounder at San Diego’s San Vicente Reservoir.

Saltwater

Best bet: White sea bass are surfacing in their famous feeding frenzies at Catalina Island. The action is not wide open, but it’s what Southland anglers have been waiting for, and more boats will be making the trip to the back side of the island. The fish have weighed as much as 42 pounds.
