Plant Workers Find Dead Newborn

A newborn boy was found dead Tuesday by workers at a Stanton recycling plant, authorities said.
“It appears as though the newborn was abandoned in the trash dump,” said Lt. Hayward Miller of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.
The discovery was made about 6 p.m. at the CR Transfer and Stanton Materials Recovery facility in the 11000 block of Knott Avenue, Miller said. The infant was found in a pile of debris being sorted on a conveyor belt.
Late Tuesday, investigators had not determined how long the body -- partially wrapped in paper -- had been in the trash.
An autopsy will be performed today to determine cause of death or whether the child was stillborn.
“We have an investigation team very actively involved in looking into the situation,” Miller said.
No one at the recycling center could be reached for comment Tuesday.
