Firefighter Pleads Guilty to Torching Church
From Times Wire Services
A volunteer firefighter who was once named Firefighter of the Year has pleaded guilty to burning down a historic church that was nearly 125 years old.
Austin Gene Mayo, 20, was arrested in November, days after the Virginia Dale Community Church was destroyed.
He pleaded guilty to arson and faces up to 12 years in prison and five years’ probation.
Donors gave nearly $90,000 to rebuild the church, according to a congregation member.
