Krauser Gets Pittsburgh a Victory

Trailing by two points with 3.9 seconds left in regulation, the Pittsburgh Panthers needed to go the length of the floor and score to avert their first defeat of the season. So they gave the ball to Carl Krauser, and he did the rest.

Krauser dribbled past three defenders for a buzzer-beating layup that tied the game, and No. 15 Pittsburgh went to beat Miami, 84-80, in double overtime Saturday at Coral Gables, Fla.

The Panthers, 16-0 overall, 2-0 Big East, survived their first road game in nearly two months to extend the nation’s longest winning streak. The Hurricanes (10-5, 0-1) lost despite two clutch baskets by Guillermo Diaz, including one with four seconds left in regulation to give them a 64-62 lead.

Following a timeout, Krauser caught the inbounds pass deep in the backcourt and decided he was going all the way. He looked at the clock at midcourt, and it showed 2.3 seconds. He looked again when he reached the three-point line, and it showed 1.9 seconds.

Krauser kept going. He dribbled around one defender and between two others before making the shot as time expired. He also made a steal and two free throws in the final minute of the second overtime and finished with 19 points.

No. 5 Wake Forest 78, Clemson 63 -- The Demon Deacons (11-0, 2-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) shot only 40% and made only two of 13 three-point attempts, yet still managed to beat the Tigers (7-6, 0-2) for their 24th consecutive home victory.

No. 7 Kentucky 75, No. 20 Vanderbilt 63 -- The Wildcats (10-1) committed 23 turnovers, but opened defense of their Southeastern Conference title by holding off a second-half rally by the Commodores (12-1, 1-1).

No. 9 Saint Joseph’s 78, Duquesne 61 -- Jameer Nelson made four three-point baskets during a 24-4 run at Philadelphia that helped the Hawks (13-0, 3-0 Atlantic 10) extend the best start in school history.

No. 10 Louisville 85, South Florida 40 -- The Cardinals (11-1, 2-0 Conference USA), who extended their winning streak to 11 games, used an 18-0 run to build a 20-point lead in the first half and opened the second half at Tampa with a 20-4 run.

No. 11 Cincinnati 90, DePaul 65 -- The Bearcats (11-0, 2-0 Conference USA) turned to their two strengths -- depth and defense -- to wear down the Blue Demons (7-6, 0-2) at Cincinnati.

No. 14 Florida 95, Tennessee 57 -- The victory at Gainesville, Fla., was the Gators’ most lopsided win in the 77-year history of the series. The Volunteers (9-2, 1-1 SEC ) couldn’t stop the Gators (11-2, 2-0) from shooting 64.8%.

No. 17 Syracuse 96, Boston College 73 -- Gerry McNamara scored 13 points in less than five minutes to help the Orangemen (11-1, 2-0 Big East) turn back a late rally by the Eagles (11-3, 1-1) at Syracuse.

No. 18 Texas 79, Baylor 57 -- The Longhorns (9-2) had no problems beating the Bears (5-9) in the opener, and extending their home winning streak to 23 games.

No. 24 Purdue 58, No. 19 Illinois 54 -- An 11-2 run in the second half made the difference for the Boilermakers (11-4, 1-1 Big Ten), who handed the Illini (10-3, 1-1) their first home loss in 24 games.

No. 21 Wisconsin 77, Michigan State 64 -- The Badgers (11-2, 2-0 Big Ten) easily won their 22nd straight home game. They also improved to 18-0 in conference home games under third-season Coach Bo Ryan. The Spartans (5-7, 0-1) are 0-6 against ranked teams.

No. 22 Mississippi State 80, Arkansas 62 -- Lawrence Roberts, a 6-foot-9 transfer from Baylor, overpowered the Razorbacks (8-5, 0-2 SEC) in the paint, getting 29 points and 11 rebounds at Starkville, Miss., to lead the Bulldogs (13-0, 2-0).

No. 23 Marquette 61, Saint Louis 59 -- Travis Diener’s bank shot near the baseline with 2.6 seconds left gave the Golden Eagles (11-2, 2-0 Conference USA) the win over the Billikens (8-5, 1-1) at Milwaukee.

Rutgers 65, No. 25 Providence 64 -- Herve Lamizana made a three-point basket from the right wing with less than a second left at Piscataway, N.J., to get Scarlet Knights (8-4, 1-2 Big East) past the Friars (8-3, 0-1).

OTHER GAMES

Northwestern 77, Iowa 68 -- The Wildcats (6-7, 1-1 Big Ten) ended a four-game losing streak -- the longest in Coach Bill Carmody’s four seasons at Northwestern. The win also ended a seven-game losing streak to the Hawkeyes (8-4, 1-1) in Iowa City.

Texas Tech 83, Oklahoma State 62 -- Andre Emmett scored 19 of his season-high 32 points in the second half as the Red Raiders (13-2) got past the Cowboys (10-2) in their Big 12 opener at Lubbock, Texas.

South Carolina 84, Georgia 63 -- The Gamecocks (14-2, 1-1 SEC) trailed only once and won for only the third time in 13 games in Athens, Ga. The Bulldogs (8-5, 0-2) have lost their first two SEC by a combined 45 points to Tennessee and South Carolina.

West Virginia 62, Georgetown 58 -- The Mountaineers (8-4, 1-1 Big East) ended an eight-game losing streak to the Hoyas (10-2, 1-2) despite playing without leading scorer Drew Schifino at Morgantown, W.Va. He was suspended indefinitely Friday for a violation of team rules.

Fresno State 61, Louisiana Tech 40 -- At Fresno, the Western Athletic Conference-leading Bulldogs (8-5, 4-0) held Louisiana Tech (7-7, 1-3) to 34% shooting and its lowest point total of the season.

Utah State 69, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 63 -- Mike Ahmads scored 16 points on eight-for-nine shooting for the Aggies (11-1, 3-0 Big West) at San Luis Obispo. The Mustangs are 6-6 and 1-3.
