Serra Is Not Penalized by Southern Section

San Juan Capistrano Serra High, which has admitted twice to breaking Southern Section recruiting rules, has escaped penalties -- for now. But several of the section’s executive committee members said Saturday they want tighter admission standards after hearing details of the violations in a meeting at Pasadena.

Serra’s issues were among four disciplinary items handled in a rare morning weekend meeting.

The others, announced by section Commissioner Jim Staunton:

* Compton Dominguez basketball player LaMar Roberson, who was declared ineligible Wednesday, has been reinstated. But the Dons, ranked No. 4 by The Times, must still forfeit a 66-52 victory over Southwest Atlanta Christian.

* Tarzana Stoneridge Prep is no longer a member of the section.

* Gardena Masada, which has had trouble fielding teams, might leave the section.

As for Serra, Staunton said his investigation into the school’s fledgling athletic program isn’t over, but that he was satisfied that school officials were working hard to comply with rules. He called off a special session of the committee he had scheduled for Jan. 22 at which he had planned to recommend that Serra be suspended from participation.

Serra Principal Tom Waszak was in the audience but did not address the committee.

“I look forward to a long and fruitful relationship with the CIF,” he said.

Girls’ Soccer

Freshman Joyce Chun scored in the third minute and Irvine Northwood’s defense made it stand up with its seventh consecutive shutout, 1-0, over Walnut on Saturday in the championship game of the Claremont tournament.

Northwood (9-5-1) ended a 32-game unbeaten streak by Walnut that dated to early last season. Walnut (15-1-0) had a number of scoring chances late in the game but the Timberwolves’ defense didn’t relent.

After taking its licks with one of the toughest nonleague schedules in the Southland -- including shutout losses to San Clemente and Dana Hills, and a scoreless tie with Mission Viejo Capistrano Valley -- Northwood has shutout victories over Irvine, Chino and Santa Ana Calvary Chapel.

Boys’ Soccer

Forward Tyler Mehl of Long Beach Wilson has committed to Loyola Marymount. Mehl has 16 goals in 13 games this season. He had 24 goals and 12 assists as a junior to help Wilson post a 26-0-5 record and win the Division I championship.

Girls’ Basketball

Janie Bos, a 6-foot-1 sophomore center at Chino, scored a school-record 40 points and had 12 rebounds Friday in a 55-47 Sierra League victory over Glendora.

Bos’ previous season high had been 18 points. “We expect points from her,” Coach Joe Murillo said, “but we don’t expect 40.”
