Friends and Family Mourn Slain Woman
A 19-year-old woman who had been looking forward to enjoying her recently acquired car and the possibility of transferring from a community college to USC will be buried Friday after her funeral at a South Los Angeles Church.
Adrienne Winston was shot to death Friday night outside her home on the 7100 block of South 10th Avenue, police said. Detectives have found no motive, suspects or weapons.
Winston was standing with her boyfriend and other friends when a young man walked up and opened fire, police said. Winston was hit in the leg and back.
A friend, Clarence Marks III, 19, was hit in the upper torso. He was later listed in stable condition at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.
“We turned off all the lights because we were afraid they would come back,” said Marquisa Jones, a friend who was in a nearby house when the shooting occurred.
Winston was pronounced dead at Martin Luther King Jr./Drew Medical Center at 11:10 p.m., according to police records.
Winston, a sophomore at El Camino College, wanted to be a forensic scientist, said her mother, Lisa.
“I am in total disbelief that my child is gone,” Lisa Winston said. “I know that we all have to die; it’s just the way that it happened.”
Jones said Winston had recently purchased a car, which she treasured. Winston, who worked at a movie theater, was applying to USC.
“I have never seen Adrienne this happy,” Jones said.
