Arizona Races Past Oregon State, 109-75

Salim Stoudamire and Hassan Adams each scored 20 points -- making 16 of 21 shots in the process -- to lead 14th-ranked Arizona to a 109-75 victory over Oregon State on Thursday night at Tucson.

It was the 21st loss in a row for the Beavers at McKale Center. They haven’t won at Arizona since 1983, the season before Lute Olson became coach of the Wildcats.

Arizona (12-3, 4-2 Pacific 10) shot a season-high 63% (43 for 68) in its biggest outburst since a 112-81 victory over Washington on Feb. 5, 1998.

“We definitely sent a message,” Arizona freshman point guard Mustafa Shakur said. “We are definitely one of the best teams in the country, but we have to play that way and show it. We need to rip a team apart from beginning to end.”

Arizona took control with a 36-8 run late in the first half and early in the second. The Wildcats outscored the Beavers, 20-6, over the last 6:08 of the first half and 16-2 through the first 3:48 of the second to take a 28-point lead.

Stoudamire made seven of nine shots, including a season-high five three-point baskets in six attempts, to move into a tie for fourth on Arizona’s career list for three-point baskets with 191.

“Salim is in a positive mode,” Olson said. “You can just see it out there. He’s happy for the team playing well. His New Year’s resolution of being positive is important to him, and it’s really important to us.”

Adams, who made nine of 12 shots, also had 10 rebounds and four second-half blocks. Andre Iguodala had 19 points and eight rebounds for the Wildcats.

Chris Stephens scored 16 points, and J.S. Nash had 15 points and seven assists for the Beavers (8-8, 2-4).

Stoudamire’s three consecutive three-point baskets keyed a 20-4 run that gave the Wildcats a 48-32 lead with 1:42 left in the half. They led at halftime, 48-34.

“When they are going like that, it is going to be hard for anybody to beat them,” said Oregon State Coach Jay John, Olson’s former assistant.

Oregon 83, Arizona State 76 -- Seniors Luke Jackson, James Davis and Andre Joseph had never won in Tempe, Ariz., where Oregon’s last victory was on Feb. 5, 2000. They played big roles in getting the Ducks (9-4, 4-2) past the Sun Devils (7-8, 1-5).

Jackson had 21 points and a career-high 12 assists, Davis scored 15 points and Joseph had all 14 of his in the second half.

The Sun Devils’ Ike Diogu, scoreless for more than 13 minutes at the start, scored 24 points to extend his national-best double-figure scoring streak to 47 games.
