Super Bowl Field Faces First and 550

The nine 3-year-olds entered in the $27,400 Super Bowl Handicap tonight have something in common: None has run the race distance of 550 yards.

Trainer Paul Jones will send out a pair -- He Could Be The One and My Encore. He Could Be The One, a son of First Down Dash, has not been worse than third in his last four starts. Ramon Sanchez will ride.

My Encore, a gelded son of Strawfly Special, has two thirds and a win in his last three outings and will be ridden by Joe Badilla Jr.

The rest of the field is the Jose Santos-owned entry of Heretic and La Faire, One More Heartache, Ep Special, Get Um Injun and Traffic Maze, who broke his maiden in his 10th start on Jan. 2.

Four! Charleene in the seventh, Dutch Coins, Humphreys Begone and Bobby Drifter in the eighth, He Could Be The Oneand One More Heartache in the ninth, and Cash Received, Im Takin The Cash and Willie Got Game in the 10th.

Shots in the dark: Humphreys Begone had excuses in his last and could bounce back in the eighth. In the 10th, Makem Laugh returns after a poor start on Nov. 21.
