The Defense Department last week also identified the following American military personnel killed in Afghanistan and Iraq:

Michael C. Barkey, 22, of Canal Fulton, Ohio; sergeant, Army National Guard. Barkey died Wednesday in Ar Ramadi, Iraq, when a tire on his military vehicle blew out and the vehicle overturned. He was assigned to the 1484th Transportation Company, Akron, Ohio.

Military Deaths -- In Sunday’s California section, the Military Deaths listing for John J. Vangyzen IV of Bristol, Mass., inadvertently referred to him as Torres. Michael Torres of El Paso and Vangyzen were both lance corporals in the Marine Corps. Both died July 5 as a result of enemy action in Al Anbar province, Iraq. Both were assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force at Twentynine Palms, Calif.

Samuel R. Bowen, 38, of Cleveland; private first class, Army National Guard. Bowen died Wednesday in Samarra, Iraq, when a rocket-propelled grenade exploded near his vehicle. He was assigned to 216th Engineer Battalion, Akron, Ohio.

Timothy R. Creager, 21, of Millington, Tenn.; lance corporal, Marine Corps. Creager died July 1 as a result of hostile action in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. He was assigned to 2nd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Scott E. Dougherty, 20, of Bradenton Fla.; lance corporal, Marine Corps. Dougherty died Tuesday as a result of enemy action in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. He was assigned to 2nd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Julie R. Hickey, 20, of Galloway, Ohio; specialist, Army Reserve. Hickey was evacuated from Bagram, Afghanistan, on June 30 and died July 4 in Landstuhl, Germany, of complications from a noncombat-related illness. She was assigned to 412th Civil Affairs Battalion in Whitehall, Ohio.

James B. Huston Jr., 22, of Umatilla, Ore.; lance corporal, Marine Corps. Huston died July 2 in a vehicle accident while his unit was responding to hostile action in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. He was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Pendleton.

Dallas L. Kerns, 21, of Mountain Grove, Mo.; corporal, Marine Corps. Kerns died Monday as a result of enemy action in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. He was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force at Twentynine Palms, Calif.

Jeffrey D. Lawrence, 22, of Tucson; corporal, Marine Corps. Lawrence died Tuesday as result of enemy action in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. He was assigned to 2nd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Stephen G. Martin, 39, of Rhinelander, Wis.; staff sergeant, Army Reserve, died July 1 at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., from injuries suffered in Mosul, Iraq, on June 24 when a car bomb exploded near his guard post. He was assigned to 330th Military Police Detachment in Sheboygan, Wis.

Brian D. Smith, 30, of McKinney, Texas; second lieutenant, Army. Smith died July 2 in Habbaniyah, Iraq, during combat operations. He was assigned to 1st Battalion, 34th Armor, 1st Brigade, 1st Infantry Division at Fort Riley, Kan.

Michael S. Torres, 21, of El Paso; lance corporal, Marine Corps. Torres died Monday as a result of enemy action in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. He was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force at Twentynine Palms, Calif.

Rodricka A. Youmans, 22, of Allendale, S.C.; private first class, Marine Corps. Youmans died Tuesday as a result of enemy action in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. Youmans was assigned to 2nd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, N.C.
