Spicy sounds, spicier food
The Oxnard Salsa Festival each year attracts throngs of visitors seeking to indulge gastronomic and musical delights. While restaurateurs and other salsa sellers serve up concoctions for sampling and purchase, amateurs can enter the “Great Oxnard Salsa Challenge” and vie for a blue ribbon in eight categories. Music fans can look forward to a sizable bill that includes percussionist Louie Cruz Beltran and his ensemble, Susie Hansen Latin Band, L.A. Mambo Combo, Nuestro, Leslie Paula & the Latin Soul Band and Orquesta Son Mayor. On the periphery: salsa dance lessons and contests, a children’s entertainment center and a marketplace.
Oxnard Salsa Festival, Plaza Park, 5th and B streets, downtown Oxnard. 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Free. (805) 247-0197. www.oxnardsalsafestival.com.
