Peavy Has Plenty to Stop Giants

Jake Peavy didn’t give up a hit until there was one out in the sixth inning, Barry Bonds got thrown out at the plate trying to score the tying run in the eighth and the San Diego Padres beat the San Francisco Giants, 3-2, Monday night at San Diego.

Brian Giles hit a tiebreaking sacrifice fly in the seventh inning for the Padres, who won their sixth consecutive over the Giants and moved a game up on San Francisco for second place in the National League West, 3 1/2 games behind the Dodgers, who won at Colorado, 9-7.

Ryan Klesko walked and went to third when Phil Nevin singled off Felix Rodriguez (3-5) to start the seventh. Scott Eyre relieved and gave up the sacrifice fly by Giles.

Scott Linebrink (5-1) pitched 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief, striking out three and walking none. Trevor Hoffman worked the ninth for his 27th save in 30 opportunities.

Akinori Otsuka started the eighth by walking Barry Bonds -- his fourth of the game. Bonds stole second then went to third on a groundout. He tried to score on A.J. Pierzynski’s grounder to second baseman Mark Loretta but was tagged out by Padre catcher Ramon Hernandez.

Arizona 4, Houston 1 -- The Diamondbacks ended their club-record 14-game losing streak behind Brandon Webb’s pitching and Scott Hairston’s hitting at Houston.

Astro starter Andy Pettitte came out after the fifth inning because of his troublesome left elbow, which has sent him to the disabled list twice this season.

Chicago 3, Milwaukee 1 -- Matt Clement won for the first time since June 8, and Mark Grudzielanek had three hits and two RBIs for the Cubs at Milwaukee. The Brewers were 0 for 10 with runners in scoring position. In their last seven games, six of them losses, they have three hits in 55 at-bats with runners on second or third.

Atlanta 4, Pittsburgh 2 -- Jaret Wright and four Brave relievers shut down the Pirates at Pittsburgh in what might have been Kris Benson’s last start. J.D. Drew pushed his hitting streak to 22 games with a single in Atlanta’s go-ahead fourth inning against Benson (8-8), expected to be dealt by Saturday’s deadline for trading without waivers.

Florida 11, Philadelphia 3 -- Jeff Conine had a three-run double, A.J. Burnett survived five rocky innings and the Marlins extended their mastery over the Phillies, who have lost 11 in a row at Miami.

St. Louis 9, Cincinnati 6 -- Tony Womack singled with the bases loaded in the 11th inning at Cincinnati, sparking a four-run rally that enabled the Cardinals to hand the Reds their sixth consecutive loss.

Montreal 19, New York 10 -- Tony Batista had four hits and a career-high six RBIs at Montreal to help the Expos extend their season-high winning streak to five games.
