New York DJ fired over racial remarks

A Long Island DJ was fired for her on-air remarks over the weekend, and it had nothing to do with sex. Raqiyah Mays lost her Saturday midday time slot for what WWPR-FM station managers considered racist remarks

“Perhaps I pushed the envelope,” she said. “I sincerely didn’t believe what I said was something wrong.”

Mays kicked off her show by saying: “I’m a racist. I have a problem with white people. Not all white people, but a lot of white people.... I can’t tell if they are being real with me or not. And then I hate when the black guy is walking down the street with the white girl. I hate both of them.”

She was fired Monday by program director Michael Saunders. “The station received numerous e-mails, phone calls and messages from listeners who were displeased and felt alienated as the result of her actions,” according to a statement released by WWPR, which is owned by Clear Channel Broadcasting.
