Rights Groups Criticize Crackdown on Media

Tunisia has widened a crackdown on media, even banning pictures of U.S. Sen. John F. Kerry, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, from newspapers, the country’s only legal rights group said.
Tunisia’s Human Rights League said that as part of its efforts to snuff out dissent, the government was mistreating and jailing journalists and censoring news reports.
“The ban on Kerry is aimed to please Bush’s administration. If Kerry were to win, it is certain the government here will ban the Bush camp,” League chairman Mokhtar Trifi said.
