A Shaky Stand on Business Suit Initiative
- Share via
The “stop shakedown lawsuits” initiative is a balanced proposal protecting small-business owners from being victimized by unscrupulous lawyers using frivolous and malicious lawsuits to extort unreasonable settlements as a payoff for not taking them to court (“Lawsuit ‘Reform’ Effort Geared to Business, Not Public Interest,” Golden State, April 12).
Michael Hiltzik’s assertion that the initiative is an attempt by business to freely pollute the environment and take advantage of immigrant tenants is the phony claim of trial lawyers who have killed similar protective measures for the last 10 years.
To the contrary, the initiative also allows the attorney general, district attorneys and other public officials to increase enforcement of California’s environmental and consumer protection laws.
