* McDonald’s Corp.’s Charlie Bell, who became chief executive of the world’s largest restaurant company last month when James Cantalupo died suddenly, has colorectal cancer. Bell’s surgery was successful and his recuperation is expected to be brief, Oak Brook, Ill.-based McDonald’s said. McDonald’s shares rose 20 cents to $27.81 on the NYSE.

* Citigroup Inc. said the Securities and Exchange Commission had opened an investigation into its Argentina business. Citigroup said it believed the probe concerned how the company accounted for business activities and allowances for bad loans for the fourth quarter of 2001 and first quarter of 2002.
