Dummy Grenade Sparks Evacuation
From a Times Staff Writer
An inert hand grenade found in a Costa Mesa garage forced the evacuation of at least four homes Saturday afternoon before it was removed by the Orange County sheriff’s bomb squad, police said.
Officers were called to 960 Junipero Drive about 12:30 p.m. by a man who found the device in his late father’s house, said Police Lt. Dale Birney.
The grenade was a harmless practice item, said Lt. Hans Strand of the Sheriff’s Department.
