Pirates Put Mondesi on Restricted List

The Pittsburgh Pirates put Raul Mondesi on the restricted list Tuesday, a day after the outfielder said he planned to sit out the season.

Mondesi, whose pay has been withheld most of the season because of a lawsuit, returned to his home in the Dominican Republic on Saturday. He was put on the restricted list after failing to show up for Tuesday’s game against Colorado.

By putting Mondesi on the restricted list, the Pirates won’t have to pay him and are allowed to add another player to their 40-man roster without losing their rights to Mondesi. Pittsburgh recalled outfielder Daryle Ward from the minors to replace Mondesi on the 25-man roster.

Major League Baseball and its players’ union are moving their drug testing to a lab in Montreal that is certified by the World Anti-Doping Agency. Since the start of baseball’s drug-testing plan last year, the tests had been collected by Comprehensive Drug Testing of Long Beach and the specimens evaluated by Quest Diagnostics of Teterboro, N.J.

Quest will continue to collect the tests, but the evaluations will take place at the INRS-Institut Armand-Frappier Research center.

Pitcher Jason Szuminski, the first MIT graduate to play in the major leagues, was sent back to the Chicago Cubs’ organization by the San Diego Padres, who activated infielder Jeff Cirillo off the disabled list.

Szuminski was acquired by the Padres in a trade with Kansas City after the Royals had selected him from the Cubs in the Rule 5 Draft.

Szuminski will report to the Cubs’ triple-A team in Iowa.
