Inmate Escapes at County-USC
A Los Angeles County Jail inmate being held on narcotics charges escaped from sheriff’s custody Friday during a medical appointment in an unsecured part of County-USC Medical Center, officials said.
The man somehow slipped out of his handcuffs about 12:50 p.m. and escaped from the hospital in Lincoln Heights, Deputy Luis Castro said.
Sheriff’s Department officials confirmed the escape five hours later. Sheriff’s detectives were searching Friday night for the man, whose name was not released.
The Sheriff’s Department tightened security procedures after the highly publicized escape of attempted murderer Kevin Pullum, who slipped out of the Twin Towers jail in July 2001 by using a fake identification card with a photo of actor Eddie Murphy as “Dr. Dolittle.”
In January 2003, another inmate, Arturo Navarro, escaped from the downtown Criminal Courts building.
