Sosa’s 549th Puts Him Past Schmidt

Sammy Sosa hit his 549th home run Saturday night to pass Mike Schmidt and take sole possession of ninth place on the career list, leading the Chicago Cubs to a 7-5 win over the San Diego Padres.

The two-run shot off Adam Eaton with two out in the fifth inning was estimated at 434 feet, the longest homer in 21 games at Petco Park. The ball landed in the far end of the third-floor balcony of the Western Metal Supply Co. Building, which helps form the left-field corner.

Sosa’s 10th homer came on a 2-1 count, one pitch after rookie shortstop Khalil Greene couldn’t hold onto a foul ball down the left-field line while trying to make a difficult over-the-shoulder catch.

Houston 7, New York 4 -- At Houston, left-hander Andy Pettitte won his fourth consecutive game and drove in a run, and the Astros stopped a three-game losing streak. Pettitte (4-1) went six innings and yielded four runs and six hits. He helped his own cause with an RBI single in the fifth inning.

Philadelphia 16, Colorado 5 -- Bobby Abreu homered and drove in a season-high five runs to help the Phillies improve to 7-1 on their 10-game trip. Scott Elarton (0-6) set a club record by losing his sixth consecutive decision to start the season. He gave up seven runs and nine hits in four innings.

St. Louis 4, Florida 0 -- Chris Carpenter (4-1) gave up four hits in 7 1/3 innings, and the Cardinals used a three-run fourth inning to win at St. Louis. Carpenter (4-1) controlled the Marlins with a sinking fastball that resulted in only one fly out, continuing his comeback after sitting out all of last season following shoulder surgery.

Pittsburgh 6, San Francisco 4 -- At San Francisco, Josh Fogg (1-4) pitched 5 2/3 strong innings for his first win of the season. The Pirates have won three in a row and four of five following a season-worst six-game losing streak. Fogg retired the first eight batters and 15 of 18 to start the game. He didn’t allow a baserunner past first until giving up back-to-back singles to Ray Durham and J.T. Snow in the sixth.

Montreal 5, Arizona 0 -- Claudio Vargas (3-2) scattered six hits in seven-plus innings, and rookie Rookie Terrmel Sledge fell a double shy of the cycle, with a single, an RBI triple and a solo home run at Phoenix.
