Yang Shen-sum, 92; Chinese Artist, Master of Lingnan

Yang Shen-sum, 92, a Chinese artist who was a master of the Lingnan school of painting, died Saturday of an apparent heart attack during a visit to Hong Kong. He had lived in Canada since 1988.
Yang was known for his bird, animal and landscape paintings in the southern Chinese style known as Lingnan. The form combines traditional techniques with Japanese and Western realist approaches.
His 2002 giant pine tree painting “Evergreen Forever” is displayed in Beijing’s Great Hall of the People.
Born in the southern province of Guangdong, Yang later moved to Hong Kong and briefly studied art in Kyoto, Japan.
