It’s a Swann Song for Chino

San Clemente wide receiver Max Swann gets kidded all the time about his name, but on Friday night in the quarterfinals of the Southern Section playoffs, Swann did resemble the Hall of Famer who played for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Swann caught a pass one-handed. He caught a ball against his body, which he had to contort to catch a deflected pass.

Every pass the junior caught seemed to matter, and San Clemente defeated third-seeded Chino, 20-16, to advance to the Division II semifinals for the fourth consecutive year.

“I tell the coaches to get me the ball,” Swann said, “and [offensive coordinator Dave Brown] told me tonight they were going to do it.”

Swann’s first reception, a six-yarder, preceded Dan Doyle’s 29-yard field goal for a 3-3 tie.

Swann’s second reception, one-handed over the middle, covered 27 yards and set up his acrobatic 11-yard catch on the next play to give the Tritons a 17-3 lead.

Swann’s last two catches came as San Clemente (10-2) killed the clock after Chino (10-2) had pulled to within 20-16 with 4:56 to go. Both came on third down and covered 14 and 11 yards, respectively.

He finished with five catches for 69 yards -- two catches more than he had in any other game for the run-oriented Tritons.

Doyle kicked a 36-yard field goal for a 20-3 lead. Mike Cooke completed 12 of 18 passes for 161 yards with an interception.

Chino got back in the game after San Clemente’s Kevin Fortin left with an ankle injury in the third quarter. Fortin had rushed 11 times for 81 yards and a two-yard score after Joel Krempasky’s interception.

Orlando Gonzales rushed 20 times for 143 of Chino’s 249 yards, and Shawn Oatis scored on runs of one and two yards.
