Robert H. Rains, 83; Worked in Hollywood Public Relations

Robert H. Rains, 83, a Hollywood motion picture and television public relations executive and author of the 2001 book, “Beneath the Tinsel: The Human Side of Hollywood Stars,” died Aug. 9 at the Motion Picture & Television Country House and Hospital in Woodland Hills, where he had been staying after a fall, said his wife, Shirley.

Rains started working in 1946 for International Pictures -- later Universal-International and then MCA/Universal -- in various publicity, promotion and advertising positions for hundreds of films, including “Jaws,” American Graffiti,” “Airplane!” and “Animal House.”

After his retirement in 1978 following a heart attack, Rains was active in the Executive Service Corp. of Southern California and SCORE, which counsels small businesses. He served in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.
