China just fell to bottom of her list
IN a recent column, it was noted that China is now No. 4 on the list of most popular destinations of American tourists [“China Beats Italy in Tourism,” Travel Log, May 29]. I have just returned from a 17-day sojourn and would now put it at the bottom of my list.
The reconstruction of the Forbidden City and preparation for the 2008 Olympic Games is noteworthy. But just as billboards and signs cover the rubble of shabbily constructed buildings and storefronts hide the hovels where too many people share too little space, one cannot help but sense the futility that this Communist/authoritarian government is producing among its people. I would not recommend this trip to anyone.
