Villaraigosa Gets Nod of Democratic Party Panel

A divided committee of the Los Angeles County Democratic Party on Saturday recommended that the local party endorse Councilman Antonio Villaraigosa for mayor of Los Angeles.
The candidate interview committee voted 17 to 8 in favor of Villaraigosa in his rematch with Mayor James K. Hahn in the May 17 runoff. The full committee of the county party will decide Tuesday whether to follow its committee’s recommendation.
When Hahn and Villaraigosa battled for the mayor’s job in 2001, the local Democratic party overwhelmingly endorsed Villaraigosa. It stayed neutral during this year’s municipal election, when five major candidates -- all Democrats -- competed.
