Martinez Outduels Smoltz and Braves
Pedro Martinez and John Smoltz had another memorable duel.
Martinez gave up four hits and two runs in seven innings and the New York Mets got two homers from David Wright in a 5-2 victory over Smoltz and the Atlanta Braves on Friday night at Atlanta.
The 38-year-old Smoltz also went seven innings, striking out 10 and hanging around long enough to throw 122 pitches. But he left trailing 3-2, and Chris Reitsma gave up two more runs in the ninth to result in the Braves’ fourth consecutive loss. Wright homered off Smoltz (1-2) in the fifth and went deep on Reitsma in the ninth. He also had a sacrifice fly.
Martinez (5-0), who struck out five, slipped up only in the sixth, when he surrendered a two-run homer to Chipper Jones on an 0-2 pitch.
“Smoltz is not easy,” Martinez said. “Any mistake you make, it’s going to be costly. Luckily for me, I made only one mistake.”
With 379 wins and 1,062 appearances between them coming into the game, Smoltz and Martinez were facing each other for the sixth time.
Cincinnati 5, Houston 4 -- Brandon Phillips had three hits and two RBIs at Cincinnati and the Reds finally beat Roy Oswalt.
Oswalt was the only pitcher in major league history to go 15-0 against a team, an unblemished stretch that included 17 starts and two relief appearances.
Washington 8, St. Louis 3 -- Albert Pujols tied a major league record with his 13th home run in April, but Nick Johnson and Ryan Zimmerman homered to lead the Nationals at St. Louis.
Pujols’ drive came off a 2-0 pitch from Felix Rodriguez and matched the mark shared by Ken Griffey Jr. in 1997 with Seattle and Luis Gonzalez in 2001 with Arizona.
Chicago 6, Milwaukee 2 -- Twice facing bases-loaded jams, Greg Maddux escaped the big inning to win his fifth consecutive start as the Cubs defeated the Brewers at Chicago. Maddux, who struck out six, earned his 323rd victory, one shy of tying Nolan Ryan and Don Sutton for 13th all-time.
Colorado 3, Florida 2 -- Clint Barmes drove in the go-ahead run with a 10th-inning single at Miami to overcome a rare blown save by Rocky closer Brian Fuentes, who got the win despite ending his franchise-record streak of 21 consecutive converted saves.
Pittsburgh 3, Philadelphia 1 -- Ian Snell gave up an unearned run over seven innings at Pittsburgh and Jack Wilson drove in the go-ahead run to help the Pirates end a seven-game losing streak.
San Francisco 10, Arizona 2 -- Barry Bonds hit a bases-clearing double to tie Babe Ruth for third on the career list with 1,356 extra-base hits and also singled in a run, as the Giants won at home.
