Ceremony recalls historic flag-raising
Aug. 13, 1906: Many Los Angeles residents took time out to commemorate the day during the Mexican American War 60 years earlier when U.S. naval forces arrived in the city and raised the American flag.
“Three mighty cheers and the sharp crack of a Marine gun rattled down into the heart of the city at noon yesterday as Old Glory was unfurled above the site of Ft. Moore in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the planting of the Stars and Stripes in Los Angeles,” The Times reported.
“As the noon hour approached, many left their offices, stepped into the street, and soon thousands were turned northward to assemble at Ft. Moore.”
Long after the noon ceremony, the newspaper added, “groups of old men stood under the big pepper trees and recounted incidents of the early days of Los Angeles city.”
