San Diego 7, at Houston 2: Woody Williams pitched seven strong innings in another successful homecoming, leading the Padres. Mike Cameron hit a two-run home run and finished with three hits for the second consecutive game for San Diego, which won two of three from the Astros. Williams (5-4), who was born in Houston and went to the University of Houston, gave up eight hits and struck out three.
Florida 6, at Arizona 5: Miguel Cabrera hit his 18th homer and drove in four runs during his seventh consecutive multihit game for the Marlins in a win at Phoenix. Dan Uggla doubled, tripled and scored three runs for the Marlins, who took two of three from Arizona.
Chicago 8, at Colorado 7: Pinch-hitter Ryan Theriot hit a three-run double in the eighth inning at Denver and the Cubs overcame 10 walks to end a four-game losing streak. The Cubs avoided their first sweep at Coors Field since July 24-27, 1997.
Cincinnati 7, at Philadelphia 5: Juan Castro and Ken Griffey Jr. drove in runs in the 11th inning for the Reds. Philadelphia’s Ryan Howard hit a two-out, run-scoring single in the ninth to tie it at 5-5. He earlier hit his 41st home run, matching him with Boston’s David Ortiz for the major league lead.
New York 3, at Washington 1: Michael Tucker hit a solo home run on the only pitch he faced to break an eighth-inning tie and lift the Mets to the win. Alfonso Soriano hit his 38th homer for Washington and the 200th of his career.
at Atlanta 7, Milwaukee 4: Brian McCann homered and drove in four runs for the Braves. Chipper Jones, returning from the disabled list, hit a tiebreaking sacrifice fly in the seventh.
