Galaxy goalkeeper Kevin Hartman gave up a goal through his legs for the only score of the game in Real Salt Lake’s 1-0 win Wednesday night at Rice-Eccles Stadium.

Salt Lake forward Jeff Cunningham took the shot in the 60th minute and it skidded low off a kneeling Hartman’s right leg and through his hands. It was Cunningham’s 15th goal.

Real Salt Lake (9-11-5) is in fifth place in the Western Conference and its victory sent the Galaxy (8-12-5) into last place, three points behind.

Four teams from each of Major League Soccer’s two conferences advance to the playoffs.

Salt Lake Goalie Scott Garlick preserved the victory with a successful challenge against streaking Galaxy forward Alan Gordon on a breakaway in the 80th minute.

Andy Williams missed a penalty kick in second-half injury time for Salt Lake.

Galaxy forward Landon Donovan was held in check, for the most part, as two and three defenders watched him.

Early in the game, Donovan passed to Gordon for a shot in the sixth minute that rattled off the crossbar.
