Snow, surf? All boards welcome
Don’t tell Al Gore, but the beach weather is taking a wild turn this weekend. In fact, the forecast at Huntington Beach calls for a high windchill factor -- and snow -- for the third annual Boardfest all-girl sports festival.
Promoters will dump more than 20 tons of the white flaky stuff on the sands of the beach, adding the frosty sport of snowboarding -- complete with a three-story-tall run -- to offerings that include skateboarding and surfing zones.
The Snowboard Rail Jam will be the first snowboarding event held on the beach and will take place on a constructed scaffold off the pier that will be lined with AstroTurf and then blown with 6 inches of man-made powder.
In addition to daily snowboarding demonstrations, professional competitors will vie for top honors with their most outlandish tricks while spectators can scoop up some of the icy crystals for snowmen and friendly snowball fights on the beach.
The festival also features Pro-Am surf and skate competitions, clinics for girls of all ages and abilities, live music performances including Alex M, Cute Is What We Aim For and Paramore, motivational speakers, a fashion show and rock climbing.
Boardfest ‘06, Huntington Beach Pier Plaza, Pacific Coast Highway and Main Street, Huntington Beach. 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday through Monday. Festival is free; clinics range from $25 to $35 each. (714) 375-1132; www.boardfest.com.
