Top-ranked Tennessee defeated No. 12 Notre Dame, 62-51, despite shooting 33% from the field and being outscored in the second half Saturday at South Bend, Ind.

The Lady Vols (12-0), who entered the game averaging 83 points, won by outrebounding the Irish, 50-35, and limiting Notre Dame to 31% shooting.

Alexis Hornbuckle had 15 points and eight rebounds, Nicky Anosike added nine points and Candace Parker had eight points and 11 rebounds for the Lady Vols, who led, 29-14, at halftime.

The Lady Vols had a 47-25 lead with 13:09 left, but the Irish cut the deficit to six, at 57-51, with two minutes left. Then Tennessee made five of eight from the free-throw line to hang on for the win before a crowd of 11,418, only the third women’s sellout in Joyce Center history.

“I felt we really battled,” Notre Dame Coach Muffet McGraw said. “I thought we came out and we were a little nervous in the first half. We’re just trying so hard with the crowd.”

Shanna Zolman, the Lady Vols’ top scorer with 17 points per game, was limited to five points on one-for-seven shooting.
