Jennings Shuts Down Padres, 5-0

The San Diego Padres wore camouflage jerseys to honor the military on Memorial Day. And it sure seemed as if Colorado’s Jason Jennings were throwing camouflage balls.

“No, they were white. I was just putting them in the right spots tonight,” Jennings said after throwing a career-best two-hitter, facing four over the minimum as the Rockies won, 5-0, Monday night at San Diego.

Matt Holliday, Brad Hawpe and rookie Ryan Spilborghs homered as the Rockies improved to 4-0 at Petco Park this season.

Jennings tied the Rockies’ record for the fewest hits in a complete game.

Darryl Kile threw a two-hitter against Florida on Sept. 10, 1998, and Shawn Estes gave up two hits in a six-inning complete game against the Dodgers on April 22, 2004.

The Padres lost for the ninth time in 13 games.

New York 8, Arizona 7 -- David Wright’s drive to the center-field wall capped a ninth-inning comeback at New York.

The Mets pulled the game out in the bottom of the ninth against Arizona closer Jose Valverde.

Endy Chavez, who came into the game in a double switch at the start of the ninth, opened the inning with a double and dashed home on a single by Jose Reyes to tie the score. Paul Lo Duca followed with his fourth hit of the game, sending Reyes to third. After Arizona walked Carlos Beltran intentionally to load the bases, Carlos Delgado struck out.

With the infield in, Wright ripped a shot over the head of Eric Byrnes, driving in the winning run. Wright was credited with a single.

St. Louis 3, Houston 1 -- Albert Pujols hit his 25th home run, a go-ahead three-run blast, in the seventh inning at St. Louis.

The Cardinals rallied after six fruitless innings against Roy Oswalt. Jason Marquis worked seven strong innings for the NL Central leaders, who sent the Astros to their sixth loss in seven games.

Craig Biggio of the Astros became the 23rd player to reach 10,000 at-bats.

Pittsburgh 14, Milwaukee 3 -- Sean Casey had three hits and drove in three runs at Pittsburgh for the Pirates in his first game since April.

Jason Bay’s streak of consecutive games with a homer ended at six as he was the only Pirates starter to not drive in a run.

Casey was playing for the first time since breaking two vertebrae in his back April 14 against the Cubs.

Philadelphia 11, Washington 2 -- Ryan Howard hit a tiebreaking three-run homer in the sixth inning at Philadelphia. It was Howard’s 13th homer in May and he has 33 RBIs in the month for the Phillies.

Clay Condrey pitched four strong innings in relief of injured starter Jon Lieber, who was put on the 15-day disabled list after the game because of a strained left groin. The club filled his roster spot with reliever Brian Sanches.

Florida 5, San Francisco 1 -- Mike Jacobs hit a solo homer and Scott Olsen pitched seven strong innings for the Marlins at Miami.

Barry Bonds went one for four with a single in his first game since hitting his 715th homer.

Chicago 7, Cincinnati 3 -- Kerry Wood pitched six solid innings and hit a run-scoring single at Chicago to get his first win since July 15. Todd Walker hit a two-run homer and Matt Murton homered for Chicago, which ended a six-game losing streak and won for the fifth time in 26 games.
