Too close for comfort
There is a fine balance to report on the actual events versus the need to exploit the worst in a sport. Close-up photographs of Pine Island’s shattered leg on Page 1 of the Sports section and on Page 19, the filly on her back with the broken leg prominently displayed, did more to dishearten and turn away many peripheral fans that horse racing desperately needs.
The unfortunate breakdown could have been handled more responsibly, yet still convey the tragedy of the loss of such a magnificent equine athlete.
We can only anticipate what might be next in the Sports section -- close-up photographs of a NASCAR crash?
