Oregon Stops Northridge

Freshman Tajuan Porter made six three-point baskets en route to a 28-point performance and Oregon defeated Cal State Northridge, 84-73, in the Basketball Travelers Classic Saturday at Eugene, Ore.
Porter, who scored 27 in the Ducks’ season-opening victory against Lehigh on Friday night, was nine for 19 from the field, including six of 11 from three-point range. Oregon’s single-game scoring record for a freshman is 31. Porter, a 5-foot-7 guard, had five three-point baskets and 21 points in the first half as the Ducks (2-0) led, 43-29, at the break.
Thomas Shewmake scored 15 points to lead the Matadors (1-1), who made only one of their first 13 shots and had nine turnovers in the first 11 minutes.
UC Irvine 53, Winston-Salem State 41 -- Patrick Sanders scored 13 points and the Anteaters held the Rams to 28% shooting and won in the Basketball Travelers Classic at Fresno.
Darrell Wonge had 17 points and eight rebounds for Winston-Salem State (0-2).
Darren Fells and Michael Hunter had eight points each for Irvine (1-1). Fells also had eight rebounds.
The Anteaters led, 28-23, at halftime and played suffocating defense early in the second half, holding the Rams to five-of-24 shooting.
Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 56, Portland 53 -- Dawin Whiten made a go-ahead three-point basket for the Mustangs (1-1), who held off the Pilots in the Oregon Rain Invitational at Corvallis. Darren Cooper had a chance to tie the score at the buzzer but missed a three-point shot.
