DIANE HAITHMAN’s informative article regarding the joyful acquisition of the Pierre Koenig archive [“Getty Buys Koenig Archives,” April 14] raised some old concerns for me. While I am absolutely delighted that the Getty Research Institute now houses this remarkable collection, I am a bit weary of seeing Pierre’s work defined solely by my father’s stunning photograph of Case Study House #22.
While Julius Shulman, with his clarity and vision, has had an enormous effect on the humanizing and public acceptance of modern architecture, I think we have to be mindful of equating the building or architect with the photograph. The photographic image is a reflection of the building; the architect designed the building.
