San Diego pulls off stunner at Kentucky

Brandon Johnson led San Diego with a career-high 27 points to stun Kentucky, 81-72, on the Wildcats’ home floor on Saturday at Lexington, Ky.

The win was one Johnson and San Diego will cherish.

“I would say this is arguably the biggest win in the history of the school,” Coach Bill Grier said. “As far as going into a place as high-level as this and winning.”

The Wildcats (5-6) were led by freshman forward Patrick Patterson, and Ramel Bradley who had 20 points each.

Rupp Arena was the biggest venue Johnson has ever played in, he said.

“It was intimidating [Friday], with no one in the stands,” he said.

The Toreros (7-8) and Wildcats traded leads twice early in the second half, but San Diego took the lead for good on a free throw by Gyno Pomare, making the score 44-43 with 13:49 to play in the game. Pomare led San Diego with 12 rebounds.

No. 2 Memphis 76, No. 17 Arizona 63 -- Robert Dozier had 18 points, Chris Douglas-Roberts scored 17 and the Tigers (11-0) knocked off the Wildcats (9-3) at Memphis, Tenn., for their latest impressive victory.

Memphis, which upgraded its schedule this season, has already defeated three ranked opponents -- Arizona, Georgetown and USC -- as well as perennial powers Oklahoma, Connecticut and Cincinnati.

Dayton 80, No. 6 Pittsburgh 55 -- Brian Roberts scored 31 points at Dayton, Ohio, and the Flyers (11-1) pushed their winning streak to 10 games by handing the Panthers (11-1) their first loss of the season.

Dayton made 22 of 28 free throws, outrebounded Pittsburgh, 41-34, and held standout freshman DeJuan Blair to nine points and six rebounds, keeping him in foul trouble the whole game.

Wisconsin 67, No. 9 Texas 66 -- Michael Flowers made a long three-pointer with two seconds left, then stole the ensuing inbounds pass and tossed it high in the air to run out the clock, lifting the Badgers (10-2) to an upset of the Longhorns (11-2) at Austin, Texas.

Texas led, 66-64, after A.J. Abrams made one of two free throws with 11 seconds left. His miss gave the Badgers a last chance and Flowers’ long shot from the right wing stunned the home crowd.

No. 11 Tennessee 82, Gonzaga 72 -- JaJuan Smith scored 18 points and the Volunteers (12-1) made up for star Chris Lofton’s cold shooting with their usual strong defense in a win over the Bulldogs (9-4) at Seattle.

Matt Bouldin scored 21 points to lead Gonzaga, which lost for the third time in five games.

Stanford 55, Fresno State 48 -- Brook Lopez scored 19 points and grabbed 12 rebounds against his hometown school, and the Cardinal (11-1) tuned up for its Pac-10 opener by beating the Bulldogs (7-6) for its seventh straight win. Stanford’s winning streak is its longest since opening the 2003-04 season 26-0.

Washington 73, Louisiana State 65 -- Tim Morris and Quincy Pondexter combined for 22 second-half points as the Huskies (8-4) rallied to beat the Tigers (7-5) at Baton Rouge, La. Washington trailed by 16 points late in the first half and took their first lead of the day on a three-pointer by Ryan Appleby that put the score at 49-47 with 11:10 left.

Florida Gulf Coast 60, Pennsylvania 30 -- Penn set an NCAA, modern-day record for the lowest first-half point total in a loss at Fort Myers, Fla. After going scoreless for the first 13 minutes 15 seconds, Penn scored only six points in the first half. That’s the lowest by a Division I team since 1986, when the shot clock was implemented. The previous record holder was Central Michigan, which scored seven against Ohio on Jan. 14, 2006.

Wayne State women 132, Temple Baptist 13 -- Jasmine McCall scored 23 points as the Warriors won by 119 points but finished three shy of the NCAA Division II record for margin of victory in a women’s game at Detroit. The Runnin’ Rams, who dressed only five players, had 54 turnovers and trailed, 76-8, at halftime.
