Pepperdine upsets Santa Clara

Chase Griffin scored a career-best 34 points, including eight in overtime, to lift Pepperdine to an 89-82 victory over Santa Clara on Monday in a West Coast Conference game at Malibu.

Griffin, who had three three-point field goals, made 11 of 16 shots overall for the Waves (8-22, 4-10 WCC). Kingsley Costain had 12 points, all on three-point shots, and Shane Griffin added 10 for the Waves.

John Bryant had a career-best 26 points and 13 rebounds for Santa Clara (20-9, 10-4), which finished second in conference. Scott Dougherty scored 16 points, all in the second half, and Sean Denison and Danny Pariseau added 15 points apiece for the Broncos.

The Waves trailed, 75-72, when Willie Galick’s three-pointer with nine seconds left in regulation tied the score. The Broncos followed with two missed shots as the game went into overtime. Pepperdine, seeded No. 8 in the WCC tournament at Portland, will play No. 5 San Diego in the first round on Friday at 5:30 p.m.

St. Mary’s 63, Loyola Marymount 47 -- The Gaels pulled away after leading by 11 at halftime in the final WCC game of the regular season at Gersten Pavilion. The Lions (13-17, 5-9) made only 18 of 54 shots, and none of Loyola’s players reached double figures. St. Mary’s (16-14, 8-6) turned 17 Loyola turnovers into 16 points.

The Lions, seeded No. 6, will open the first round of the conference tournament against host Portland on Friday at 8 p.m.

Long Beach State 82, Pacific 76 -- The 49ers wrapped up the outright Big West Conference title with the victory over the host Tigers (11-16, 5-7). Aaron Nixon’s 32 points led the 49ers (20-7, 10-2).
