Senators consider response to Bush troop buildup plan
WASHINGTON — With Senate leaders still negotiating over resolutions on President Bush’s plan to boost troop levels in Iraq, debate on the contentious issue is not expected before next week.
“It’s a moving target,” said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), who has called for adoption of a nonbinding resolution criticizing the plan.
Some Republicans, including Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), are instead calling for legislation to set benchmarks to measure progress in Iraq.
Tuesday, Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) introduced a bill calling for the withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iraq.
And today, Sen. Russell D. Feingold (D-Wis.) is expected to introduce a measure that would cut off funds for U.S. troops in Iraq six months after it is passed.
