Brazil moves on; Venezuela eliminated

Brazil rediscovered its game and Robinho scored twice in a 6-1 thrashing of Chile that propelled the defending champion into the Copa America semifinals on Saturday at Puerto La Cruz, Venezuela.

Brazil, which struggled in the group stage, will travel to Maracaibo to face Uruguay on Tuesday.

Uruguay ousted host Venezuela, 4-1, in a quarterfinal at San Crisobal.

The first three goals by Brazil came in an 11-minute span in the first half, beginning with a beautiful double header put away by Juan off a corner kick that first brushed the head of Julio Baptista in the 16th minute.

Baptista then scored from the left side in the 22nd minute.

Robinho made it 3-0 from the top of the penalty area, and scored his tournament-best sixth goal at the start of the second half.

With six goals in four matches, Robinho could challenge Pele’s record eight goals at the 1959 tournament.

Josue scored Brazil’s fifth in the 68th and Vagner Love capped the scoring with six minutes left.

Chile’s Humberto Suazo scored his team’s only goal in the 75th minute.

In Uruguay’s victory, Diego Forlan scored the first of his two goals in the 38th minute before Juan Arango tied it for Venezuela three minutes later on a free kick.

Uruguay took control again when Pablo Garcia scored in the 67th minute. Renny Vega scored in the 87th minute and Forlan got his second in injury time to close it out.
