Top-seeded Vanderbilt is eliminated

Pinch-hitter Alan Oaks homered off Vanderbilt ace David Price in the top of the 10th inning and Michigan beat the overall top-seeded Commodores, 4-3, on Monday night at Nashville to advance to the NCAA tournament’s Division I super regionals.

Price (11-1), a left-handed starter projected as one of the top picks in this week’s first-year player draft, pitched the ninth and 10th innings in relief.

Adam Abraham (5-1) earned the win in relief, and Michael Powers got the save with a perfect 10th.

Nate Recknagel hit a two-run homer for second-seeded Michigan. Pedro Alvarez homered for the Commodores.

Also Monday, defending national champion Oregon State advanced to the regional championship game with two elimination wins. The Beavers defeated Rutgers, 5-2, then beat Virginia, 5-3, to force a title game between those teams today.

Other teams that qualified for next weekend’s super regionals: North Carolina defeated Western Carolina, 6-5; Louisville routed Missouri, 16-6; Texas A&M; beat Louisiana Lafayette, 5-2; South Carolina edged Charlotte, 11-6; Clemson defeated Coastal Carolina, 15-3, and Wichita State shut out Arizona, 3-0.
